Carnivals are one of Miffy’s favorite summer activities, and this weekend, she is creating her own right here in the backyard! With a few tools and some creativity, you can spend all day playing your favorite games, too.
Check out the ideas below for some fun in the sun, and be sure to tag Miffy’s Instagram and Facebook in any photos or videos of your backyard carnival!

**For all of these activities, try standing around 4 feet away from the goal items (the stacked cups, the stool, the chalk rings, etc.) If this distance is not challenging enough, move farther away.
Mini Bowling
What you’ll need:
- Empty plastic water bottles
- 3 balls
- A flat surface
How to play:
- Set the plastic water bottles in a triangle formation, starting with one in front, two behind it, then three, and so on. For younger children, fewer rows of bottles are easier to knock over.
- Then, roll the balls one at a time at the pins (water bottles), and count how many you knock over.
- If you knock them all down in one roll, you got a strike!
- If you want to make it a competition, whoever knocks over the most pins, wins.
Hula-hoop toss
What you’ll need:
- Hula-hoops
- A stool – For younger children, a shorter stool makes the game easier
How to play:
- Toss the Hula hoop over the stool – You get three tries!
- If it leans against the stool, you get 1 point. If it completely circles it, you get 3 points.
Water Balloon Toss
What you’ll need:
- Water balloons
- Sidewalk chalk
How to play:
- Draw three large rings on the ground, with the smallest in the center, about 10 inches across, then draw the next ring 10 inches outside the first circle (30 inches across total), and the third another 10 outside the second circle (50 inches across total).
- The innermost ring is 5 points, the second ring is 3 points, and the largest ring is 1 point.
- Toss 5 water balloons into the rings, aiming for the center!
Knock Down the Tower
What you’ll need:
- Water Balloons or Balls
- Empty cups (no glass, all the same size)
How to play:
- Stack the cups on top of each other, pyramid style. Start with 4 on the bottom, stack 3, then 2 then 1 on the very top. Add more layers for a bigger challenge.
- Using 3-5 balls or water balloons, take aim and try to knock over as many cups as you can!
- If you want to make it a competition, make two stacks next to each other, and whoever knocks down all their cups first, wins!
